From Steele’s Mill, you are less than twenty minutes’ drive from Pooley Bridge and the northern tip of Ullswater – often described as England’s most beautiful lake. It is our nearest “big lake” and a great way to dip into the Lake District before retreating to the peace of the River Lyvennet.
Why Go: England’s Most Beautiful Lake, Just Up the Road
Ullswater has a quieter, more timeless feel than some of the busier Lakes. Long and sinuous, with high fells dropping straight to the water, it has inspired poets and painters for centuries. From Kings Meaburn, you can be parked on the shore at Pooley Bridge in around twenty minutes, swapping riverbank for lakeshore with very little effort.
It makes a great day or half-day out: a scenic drive through the Eden Valley, a wander around the village, and then the real highlight – stepping aboard one of the famous Ullswater “Steamers”.
The Ullswater Steamers Experience
The Ullswater Steamers are heritage vessels that have been carrying passengers on the lake for over 160 years. Today they link Pooley Bridge, Howtown, Aira Force and Glenridding, creating a beautiful, relaxing way to explore the fells without battling Lake District traffic or parking.
At Pooley Bridge you board from the pier just outside the village. Once underway, the boat slips quietly down the lake, past wooded shores, hidden bays and ever‑changing views of the surrounding mountains. You can sit out on deck on a fine day, or stay cosy inside and simply watch the scenery unfold.
Many guests choose to sail one way and walk the other. The classic route is to take the steamer to Howtown and follow the lakeside path back to Pooley Bridge – a glorious, undulating walk with constant water and fell views. Alternatively, continue by boat all the way to Glenridding at the southern end of the lake, where you are ringed by high peaks and have a choice of cafes, short strolls and more serious hikes.
A Calmer Alternative to Windermere
One of the pleasures of Ullswater is that it feels more spacious and less hurried than Windermere. Out on the water, with the boat’s engine note and the wake fanning out behind you, the mountains feel close but the crowds do not. It is a lovely way to “see the Lakes” in comfort, especially if you prefer to leave the car parked for a few hours.

Then simply choose your sailing, pack a waterproof and perhaps a picnic, and let the lake do the rest – before heading back to the quiet of Steele’s Mill and the River Lyvennet.
