The experience from Appleby
For a relaxed day out, we recommend taking a return trip south from Appleby towards Settle. Appleby Station itself is charming, with traditional buildings and a sense of stepping back into the golden age of rail. Once on board, find a window seat and settle in as the train pulls away from the Eden Valley and climbs steadily into more dramatic country.
As you head south, the scenery begins to open out: quiet farms, dry-stone walls, and scattered hamlets gradually give way to the high moors of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The line curves and climbs, offering ever-changing views that you simply don’t get from the road.
Crossing the Ribblehead Viaduct
The undisputed highlight of the journey is the crossing of the Ribblehead Viaduct.
