From the door you can be on a riverside path within minutes, climbing to big-sky moorland, or freewheeling through the Eden Valley’s quiet lanes towards the Lake District fells on the horizon.

A Perfect Base for Exploring on Foot

Step outside and you are immediately in walking country. The Lyvennet winds past the garden, inviting relaxing strolls where you can stretch your legs after the journey and become acquainted with the river’s inhabitants – dippers bobbing on stones, herons poised in the shallows, and brown trout holding in the current. For longer days out, the surrounding Eden Valley offers a network of footpaths and bridleways, with routes ranging from easy, level riverside walks to more demanding hill days in the nearby North Pennines and Yorkshire Dales.

Head towards Appleby for a easy riverside circuit, or challenge yourself on the undulating lanes that climb towards the North Pennines and across to the fringes of the Lakes.
