The River Lyvennet is a fast-flowing limestone beck renowned for its “gin-clear” waters. Because it is a smaller stream, it offers a distinct advantage to our guests: the Lyvennet often runs clear and remains highly fishable even when the larger main rivers in Cumbria are flooded and blown out.
Wild Butter-Yellow Trout
This stretch of the river is a sanctuary for wild brown trout. Thanks to the nutrient-rich, slightly alkaline water, the trout here are incredibly solid, strong fighters. They are famous among local anglers for carrying a distinct and beautiful “butter-yellow” colouration that sets them apart from fish in other parts of the Eden catchment. While it is overwhelmingly a trout stream, you may also occasionally hook a beautiful grayling.
Fishing the Lyvennet is a highly rewarding, technical experience. Because the water is crystal clear and the fish are easily spooked, stealth and careful rivercraft are essential.
Good To Know...
Tactics:
This is the perfect water for “stalking” fish. “Fine and far off” is the golden rule, with upstream nymphing and dry fly fishing being the most consistent and popular methods. (Lure or streamer fishing is rarely effective here).
The Environment:
As a natural, meandering stream, the banks can be beautifully overgrown and tree-lined in places. The tight casting space provides a wonderful test of skill for the seasoned fly fisher.
Hatches:
The alkaline water makes the river an invertebrate factory, with Gammarus shrimps providing a year-round staple. If you visit in spring or early summer, look out for incredible hatches of up to eight different Ephemerid species, plenty of caddis, midges, and a highly respectable hatch of Danica mayfly

Steele’s Mill perfectly complements your days on the water. After wading the river, you can return to 5-star luxury and plenty of historic character. Step out onto the first-floor viewing balcony with a drink in hand to watch the evening rise; it is a magical spot to quietly acquaint yourself with the river’s inhabitants as dusk settles. As the evening cools, head inside and sink into the comfortable sofas. With the log-effect gas stove casting a warm glow, it is the ideal setting to relax and recount the day’s best catches.
When it is finally time to turn in, the second-floor master suite awaits. Drift off in a plush king-size bed wrapped in goose-down duvets and crisp linen sheets, ensuring you wake up fully rested and ready for the morning’s hatch.

A Display of Nature
Even when the fish aren’t biting, the banks of the Lyvennet offer a captivating display of nature. As you wade the river or relax on the patio, keep your eyes peeled for flashes of brilliant blue as kingfishers dart past. You will regularly spot dippers bobbing on the rocks, herons stalking the shallows, and if you are very quiet, you might even see a resident otter slipping through the current.
