From the moment you arrive, most dogs head straight for the sights and smells of the river. The Lyvennet runs alongside the mill, with birdsong, rustling trees and the gentle sound of water setting the scene for long, leisurely walks. Step outside and you can be exploring quiet lanes, riverside paths and open countryside within minutes, without needing to get back in the car.
The enclosed garden gives dogs space to potter safely while you relax with a coffee or a glass of wine. There’s outdoor furniture and a patio where you can sit and watch the light fade over the river, with your dog dozing happily at your feet after a day of adventures.
For Humans and Hounds
Inside, Steele’s Mill is all about comfort and character. Oak floors, original millstones set beneath glass and a cosy first-floor sitting room which creates a warm, welcoming space to come back to. After a blustery walk, you can sink into the sofas by the gas stove while your dog stretches out and dries off in the warmth.
The practicalities are taken care of too. Underfloor heating on the ground floor and oil-fired central heating upstairs helps everyone warm up quickly after wet weather walks. There’s a washer/dryer for muddy towels, and plenty of room in the kitchen for dog beds and bowls so your pet can settle in as part of the family.

Walks from the Door
One of the joys of staying at Steele’s Mill with a dog is how little you need to plan. Step outside and you can follow the river, wander through the village of Kings Meaburn or head out along quiet country lanes with views towards the distant Lake District fells.
The Eden Valley is known for its calmer landscapes and unhurried pace, ideal for older dogs or those who prefer pottering to peak-bagging, yet you’re still within easy reach of more demanding walks if you and your dog enjoy a bigger day out.
A Few Sensible Details
We’re genuinely dog-friendly, not just dog-tolerant, but we do ask owners to be mindful of the surroundings. The river, wildlife and neighbouring farmland are all part of what makes Steele’s Mill so special, so we encourage guests to keep dogs under close control outside the garden, and to bring their usual bedding, towels and feeding bowls so they feel at home.
