Just five miles from Steele’s Mill, Appleby-in-Westmorland is our local market town and a place with a wonderfully unhurried charm. Steeped in history and closely associated with the remarkable Lady Anne Clifford, it makes a great half-day or full-day outing, whether you are in the mood for relaxing riverside strolling, a wander through centuries of history, or simply a potter around town.
Appleby was once the county town of the old county of Westmorland and still feels every inch the historic hub of the Eden Valley. Its heart lies around the broad sweep of Boroughgate, the parish church of St Lawrence, and the atmospheric ruins and buildings of Appleby Castle. This is a town to explore on foot, taking your time to notice the details: worn stone doorsteps, old coaching inns, and the ever-present backdrop of the River Eden.
The town’s story is closely intertwined with Lady Anne Clifford, the 17th-century noblewoman who fought for and eventually reclaimed her family estates. She restored castles, churches, and almshouses across the region, and her legacy is still very much alive in Appleby. As you walk, you are following in the footsteps of a woman who helped shape the landscape and buildings you see today.

Stroll Up Boroughgate
Begin at the Cloisters at the lower end of town and wander your way up Boroughgate, often described as one of the finest streets in England. It gently climbs between handsome sandstone buildings, independent shops, and traditional inns, with the fells peeping over the rooftops on clear days.
At the top, Appleby Castle comes into view, guarding the town much as it has done for centuries. The walk from the Cloisters to the castle is not long, but it is rich in atmosphere. Take your time, look back down the hill towards the church and the Moot Hall, and it is easy to imagine the hustle and bustle of market days gone by, carriages arriving at the castle, and Lady Anne herself travelling between her estates.
Appleby Castle is one of the great historic houses of the North of England and was a principal seat of the Clifford family. Today, parts of the castle and its grounds can be visited, offering a glimpse into the world Lady Anne Clifford fought so hard to preserve. Follow the River Eden
For a gentler pace, the riverside walk along the Eden is a delight. The path is largely flat and easy underfoot, making it ideal for a relaxed amble after exploring the town. You can watch the river curve around its meadows, look out for birdlife and, in season, enjoy the changing colours of the trees reflected in the water.
This is a lovely contrast to the more intimate River Lyvennet at Steele’s Mill: broader, more expansive, but with the same sense of peace. On a quiet weekday, you may share the path with only a handful of dog walkers and locals going about their day.
From Kings Meaburn, Appleby-in-Westmorland feels pleasingly close yet distinct enough to be a change of scene. Spend a morning exploring Boroughgate and the castle, pause for lunch in town, then round off your visit with the riverside walk before returning to the calm of Steeles Mill.
