Where the Lakes, Dales and Pennines Meet

The Eden Valley feels wonderfully rural, yet you are perfectly placed for days out in every direction. To the west, the Lake District fells rise on the horizon, close enough for day trips but far enough that you return each evening to calm rather than crowds. To the south and east, the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are within easy reach, offering wild moorland, big skies and quiet walking.

Steele’s Mill lies between the historic market town of Appleby, five miles away, and Penrith, around ten miles to the north. Both are ideal for stocking up on local produce, browsing independent shops or catching a train, yet the mill itself remains firmly rooted in its own riverside world.

The River Lyvennet

The Eden Valley takes its name from the River Eden, which flows from the Mallerstang valley to the Solway Firth. Steele’s Mill, however, has its own more intimate river – the Lyvennet – right outside the door. Here, the valley is a patchwork of meadows, woodland and stone-built farms, with the soft rush of water a constant backdrop.

From the balcony and garden you can watch the river change with the light and weather, and become acquainted with its inhabitants: kingfishers flashing low over the water, dippers bobbing on the stones, herons stalking the shallows and, with patience, the possibility of seeing otters slipping silently by. The one mile of private double-bank fishing reserved for guests gives you a rare sense of having your own stretch of Eden Valley river to explore.

Villages & Market Towns

Kings Meaburn itself is a quiet village. Nearby Appleby, once the county town of Westmorland, sits in a loop of the River Eden and is known for its historic buildings and riverside walks. Penrith offers more in the way of services, eateries and transport links, while still retaining the character of a traditional market town.

Across the valley, scattered hamlets, churches and farms tell the story of a landscape that has been quietly lived in and worked for centuries. Touring by car, cycle or on foot, you can take your time discovering small lanes, viewpoints and riverside paths that rarely feel busy, even in high season.

A Peaceful Base for Exploring – or Simply Being

Whether you come to walk, cycle, fish or simply rest, the Eden Valley gives you space. Space to roam, but also space to slow down.
