Steele's Mill - Holiday Cottage

 King’s Meaburn, Penrith, Cumbria

5-Star Self-catering holiday accommodation on the banks of the River Lyvennet in Cumbria

Restored mill is perfect spot for views of river’s varied wildlife

water wheelThis newly-restored corn mill sits in a quiet, idyllic setting on the banks of the River Lyvennet in Cumbria. It includes a viewing balcony where you can relax, take in the wonderful views and become acquainted with the inhabitants of the river, which include kingfisher, dipper, brown trout, heron and the occasional otter.

A mill has stood on the present site since at least 1327 and every effort has been made to preserve its history, including retaining the original mill workings such as millstones, applewood cogs and mill gearing.

The balcony with patio furniture above the half renovated water wheel. Sadly the mill race has long gone but used to have a 300 metre stream from the river down to the mill. A small wicket gate opens on to the riverside field so guests are close to the fly fishing (free to guests) which extents to 1 mile on both banks.

The three storey, freestanding building has been sensitively restored by local craftsmen using local materials. Local oak has been used for fittings such as doors and staircases, and there is handmade oak furniture in the two bedrooms.

Steele’s Mill is family-run with a friendly welcome and service. An ideal base for an active outdoor or touring holiday, it has a high standard of accommodation, including a fully fitted kitchen/dining area which features the original mill workings behind glass.
